Dear Neighbor,

The latest Chief’s Monthly Report (June) shows year-to-date increases in murder (96 percent), aggravated assault (15 percent), and auto theft (9 percent) compared to 2020. Robbery (-12 percent) and simple assault (-3 percent) were among the crime categories that decreased.

This Thursday, starting at 4:00 p.m., the Austin City Council will consider community input on the proposed fiscal year 2022 budget. The second public budget hearing is scheduled for July 29 at 10:00 a.m.

City Manager Spencer Cronk’s proposed budget funds two police cadet classes. This commitment to future cadet classes is a significant step toward solving the Austin Police Department’s staffing crisis. The proposed budget also includes construction and staffing of the Loop 360 Fire/EMS station, increased police pension funding, and eighteen new EMS personnel.

Register to speak Thursday afternoon. Urge the Austin City Council to fund the police cadet classes and support the city manager’s proposed public safety budget. Speaker registration instructions are available online, and the deadline to sign up is Wednesday at noon.

Best,

Corby
